A Little Jerral Poetry

Origins and Examples
over the years...

Ahh, Poetry.   Poetry has always been an important part of my life. As a child I always LOVED having someone read beautiful poetry to me. As a University student my studies wove through many different disciplines... Engineering, Business, Psychology, Counseling, Education, Foreign Langauges, Ballet, Accounting, Law...

I earned a Secondary Language Arts teaching degree and taught English and Foreign Languages for a few years. Then I returned to my Engineering and Business side and worked as a Business Consultant and Systems Engineer for several years. Then as of Spring 2004 I renewed my Teaching Certificate again. I thought it was time.

In the midst of the Teaching and the Business Consultikng and the Engineering years, I found time for Hospice volunteering and writing a book to help out in caregiving. And Handwriting Analysis has always been a part of my life vision anywhwere I've been in the professional world, from teaching to Hospice to Computers & Engineering. As the Handwriting Analyist that I am, I can't help but notice its quiet little messages.

And it's been much that same way with Poetry. Poetry has always been there, read and written during and between jobs, during and between relationshps, in times of struggle, hope, confusion, love, celebration. Poetry is Life Reflection to me.

Some of my favorite classical poets include Emily Dickinson, William Butler Yeats, Poe, Shakespeare, Milton. I tend to prefer classical lyrical verse to the more free / open styles. As a lyricist for my own or other people's musical compositions, it's more often that rhythmic lyrical form which speaks to me.

One near-poetry-but-not-quite which sets forth some of my basic values is my Life's Compass from early 1996. I wrote this shortly after the death of Vern Ho, a dear friend of mine who for years had, as I like to say, taunted me in his Organizational Development Consultan role for years, telling me I needed to have a "Mission Statement" for me, my companies, my life.   Ok... Fato! Done now; Vern would be happy! :-)

Take a look at some of the images in the Mission Statement. You'll find these and other common images woven into and through most of my poetry. Among them, Clouds, Eternity, Shadows, Spiritual Questioning, Love & Loss... These are some of the recurring themes in my poetry... but of course these are not exactly original, nor news to most poets!

I have stacks & stacks & books and books of quite literally hundreds or maybe even thousands of poems over the thrity-something years I've been writing. But I've pulled together some for display here on the web of my favorites. These are a few of my more popular, the main attractions in bold
I list here some of my other work, too... Some select Short Story, Book and Song pieces which are representative of other works. Perhaps more later as I get it formatted for the web?
